- The best piece of French I've ever written is my doctoral dissertation, especially chapter 5 – a survey of multidimensional indexing techniques in databases. Second to it is this years-old aimless post(fr) on the forums of Leboost, a website for the young (and older) party people and other night owls of Nantes, the largest city of our Atlantic coast. Be warned that I was both bored to death and annoyed by an occasional insomnia – the post was never meant to be serious.
- For pieces of my writing in English, the text on this website should be enough. For more “spontaneous” text, my alias on the Opera forums is topdawg. On OSnews and most of the forums and websites I've registered at, it's vodoomoth.
Samples
Below are sample translations and localizations that I have chosen either because I'm a user of the software involved or because I'm a regular reader of the websites involved. In particular, I'm an avid follower of OSnews because of the website's (audience and articles) contribution to my command of English. Note that the translations have not been commissioned.
Translation samples
Apple being a recurring subject in the translation samples is pure coincidence.
I recommend opening each sample and its matching original version in separate browser windows/tabs so as to make comparing the two versions easier. I have preserved the general layout and adapted links and references wherever pertinent. I have also linked to the same images that the original text linked to.
- Here is my translation(fr) – with comments(fr) – of a short article by Nilay Patel of thisismynext.com. The original article(en) deals with the frenzy that surrounded the granting of a software patent to Apple. My typical (and minimum) rate for a project similar to this article is 0.12€ per source word – final price would be 73.08€.
- Here is my translation(fr) – with comments(fr) – of a longer article from OSnews.com. The original article(en) was written by the managing editor, Thom Holwerda. It deals with a concept of intellectual/industrial property laws of the European Community that is generally unknown to the public. Its context was the Apple vs Samsung war over tablets that had just started at the time of its writing. My typical rate for a project similar to this article is 0.15€ per source word, final price: 383.7€. In order to obtain the exact rendition that I linked to above (comments, research on websites and in documents, code, CSS, ...), a rate of 0.20€ per word is more realistic. So the final price would then be 511.6€.
Localization sample
- I have had the honor and great pleasure to do the localization in French of Exact Audio Copy v1.0 beta 3, the best CD ripping software available. This work has been a hefty load to lift (25,000+ source words). The language file and my comments (both as text files) are available for download. Please note that the comments are overly detailed and reach an unusual level of details, for the sake of showing the wealth of things that I take into consideration when working on a localization. Also, EAC has a large userbase and maintainers of the language file that I'm offering might need insight into the decisions I made.
